Walt Disney

Walter Elias Disney was born on 5 December 1901 in Chicago and spent much of his childhood in Marceline, Missouri, and Kansas City. After ambulance service in France at the end of the First World War he drew ads and short cartoons, then moved to Hollywood in 1923 with his brother Roy. Their studio created Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, then, after losing that character, Mickey Mouse. Steamboat Willie (1928) used synchronized sound. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937) was the first American feature-length drawn animation to find a large audience and to win a special Academy Award.

The company later released Pinocchio, Fantasia, Dumbo, and Bambi, moved into live action and television, and opened Disneyland in Anaheim in 1955. Disney also created The Mickey Mouse Club and weekly television hours that advertised the park. He died in Burbank, California, on 15 December 1966, while Walt Disney World in Florida was still being planned. The firm he started remains a large entertainment company. No public-domain still of his face is used here. The site’s 12-year cycle reads 5 December 1901 as Ox/Sagittarius.
