Jane Fonda

Jane Seymour Fonda was born on 21 December 1937 in New York City, the daughter of the actor Henry Fonda. She studied at Vassar and with Lee Strasberg, then became a film star in the 1960s with Cat Ballou, Barefoot in the Park, and Barbarella. She won Academy Awards for Klute (1971) and Coming Home (1978). Other widely seen films include They Shoot Horses, Don’t They?, Julia, The China Syndrome, 9 to 5, and On Golden Pond, in which she acted with her father. In the 1980s her exercise videos reached a large home-video audience.

She was a visible opponent of the Vietnam War, a fact that still draws argument in the United States. Later she returned to film and television, including Grace and Frankie. She has also written memoirs and campaigned on climate and women’s issues, and she has been arrested at climate protests in Washington. The site’s 1937 Chinese New Year of 11 February makes 21 December Ox/Sagittarius.
