Barack Obama

Barack Hussein Obama II was born on 4 August 1961 in Honolulu, Hawaii. He studied at Occidental College, Columbia University, and Harvard Law School, where he was the first African-American president of the Harvard Law Review. He worked as a community organizer on Chicago’s South Side, taught constitutional law at the University of Chicago, and served in the Illinois State Senate from 1997 to 2004. In 2004 he won a United States Senate seat from Illinois after a Democratic convention speech that made him a national figure. He published Dreams from My Father before that campaign.

He was elected the 44th president of the United States in 2008 and re-elected in 2012, the first Black person to hold the office. His administrations passed the Affordable Care Act, authorized the raid that killed Osama bin Laden, negotiated the Iran nuclear deal, and joined the Paris climate agreement. The 2009 stimulus and the Dodd-Frank financial rules also belong to those years. He left office in January 2017. He later wrote the memoir A Promised Land and, with Michelle Obama, founded the Obama Foundation.
