Paul Newman

Paul Leonard Newman was born on 26 January 1925 in Shaker Heights, Ohio. He served in the Navy during the Second World War, studied at Kenyon College and the Yale School of Drama, and worked in live television and on Broadway before film stardom. Somebody Up There Likes Me (1956), The Hustler (1961), Hud (1963), Cool Hand Luke (1967), Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969), The Sting (1973), and The Color of Money (1986) — the last of these won him an Academy Award for Best Actor — made his face one of the most familiar in American film. He also directed Rachel, Rachel and sometimes raced cars.

With his wife Joanne Woodward he lived for many years in Connecticut. He founded Newman’s Own in 1982; the food company states that it has given its profits to charity. He died in Westport, Connecticut, on 26 September 2008. The site’s Chinese New Year for 1925 is 24 January, so 26 January — two days after the turn — is Ox/Aquarius.
