Enya

Eithne Pádraigín Ní Bhraonáin, known professionally as Enya, was born on 17 May 1961 in Gweedore, County Donegal, Ireland, into a musical family. She performed with her siblings’ group Clannad in the early 1980s, then left to work with producer Nicky Ryan and lyricist Roma Ryan. Their first major commission was the soundtrack for the BBC series The Celts. The 1988 album Watermark, led by the single Orinoco Flow, brought her a worldwide audience and a sound built from layered vocals rather than a touring band.

Later albums include Shepherd Moons, The Memory of Trees, A Day Without Rain — whose single Only Time was widely heard in 2001 — Amarantine, and Dark Sky Island. She has sold tens of millions of records, won several Grammy Awards, and contributed music to films, including May It Be for The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, which was nominated for an Academy Award. She is known for multi-tracked vocals, keyboards, and a private working life in Ireland. This site’s 1961 Chinese New Year date of 15 February makes 17 May Ox/Taurus.
