Michael J. Fox

Michael Andrew Fox was born on 9 June 1961 in Edmonton, Alberta, and took the middle initial J professionally because another Michael Fox was already in the actors’ union. He acted on Canadian television as a teenager, then moved to Los Angeles. Family Ties (1982–1989) made him a star as Alex P. Keaton. Back to the Future (1985) and its sequels made him internationally known as Marty McFly. He also appeared in Teen Wolf, The Secret of My Success, Casualties of War, and later Spin City, for which he won several Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild awards.

He publicly disclosed a Parkinson’s diagnosis in 1998 and founded the Michael J. Fox Foundation, which funds research. He has continued to act in selected roles, including appearances on The Good Wife, Designated Survivor, and the documentary Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie. He has written memoirs about work and illness, including Lucky Man. This site’s 1961 Chinese New Year date of 15 February makes 9 June Ox/Gemini.
