How each sign shows up as a parent, and how their own upbringing shaped them. The family side of every Chinese and Western sign.
Parents · Chinese Horoscope

Year of the Rat
Rat parents are dedicated to their children. They encompass their little
ones with love and attention and enjoy watching their offspring grow and
experience the world. When their children are small they brood a great deal
over them. Rats become concerned if their babies don't develop as quickly
as other children.
They anguish over whether or not they are raising their youngsters
correctly, and will inevitably consult many books on this subject. With the
mental capacity to pick things up easily, Rats tend to get agitated with
people who are not quite as quick-witted as they are. No wonder this trait
could lead to conflict between Rat parents and their children should any of
their children be late bloomers or have any learning disabilities!

Year of the Ox
Ox people make for very protective parents. They will unselfishly work
their fingers to the bone to provide a thriving, happy and secure home
where their children feel safe. In return, however, the Ox mother and
father demand that their youngsters be respectful and polite. In comparison
with other parents, Ox people can seem a bit authoritarian, but they are
conventional and believe in instilling traditional values in their
children.
A good education is especially important and by utilizing their educational
opportunities, Ox children can make their lives and relationships with
their parents a lot easier. Ox parents expect their children to listen,
behave and be attentive while they are at school. A display of rebellion is
the fastest way to be punished in an Ox household.

Year of the Tiger
Tiger parents are quite similar to the characters of their real life
counterparts. They will walk through fire to protect their children or to
defend them from others. As warm and affectionate as they are, they can
become fierce and defensive when their children are at stake. Tiger parents
can also be as playful as kittens, playing family games and getting great
enjoyment from it.
Tiger parents will become enraged if one of their children crosses the line
of obedience. As open-minded and liberal as they are, they will not, under
any circumstances, tolerate bad manners, or a lack of respect for other
adults. They take their role as parents very seriously, and they believe in
the value of a good education. Tiger parents are convinced that they
themselves provide the best role models for their children.

Year of the Rabbit
Many Rabbit people have large families. Although they love their children
intensely and take care of them quite affectionately, sometimes Rabbit
parents can come off as looking uninterested or distant. Still, Rabbits are
so protective of their children that they often appear strict and
overbearing. When their children are little, Rabbit parents will dress them
in cute little outfits and will insist they act politely in public.
Rabbits often find themselves wrapped around their children's little
fingers and will do anything for them to make them happy and to keep the
peace. Rabbits despise arguing with their children, as conflict makes them
quite uncomfortable, and they will avoid it at all costs, even if it means
making the occasional concession.

Year of the Dragon
Because people born in the year of the Dragon are usually so busy working
on furthering their careers, they usually put off having and raising
children until later in life than most of the other Signs in the Chinese
zodiac. Parenting doesn't come very easily to the Dragon, and children
often make them decidedly uncomfortable at first.
However, when Dragons do become parents, they approach it with the same
enthusiasm and skill as their many other endeavors, and generally manage to
make a good job of it. They are proud parents and tend to boast about the
accomplishments and good looks of their children. Dragon parents must
beware of driving their kids too hard, or of expecting too much from them
to soon in life.

Year of the Snake
Snake parents are likely to form intimate bonds throughout their lifetime
with different partners. With these relationships come children, and it is
likely that the Snake will have many children and stepchildren throughout
their lifetime. Regardless, Snakes are devoted and dedicated parents,
willing and able to defend the livelihood and happiness of their children.
Snake parents often use humor to deal with their children.
Because they like peace and quiet, they generally use humor to avoid any
confrontational situations that may arise. Snake parents are not known to
be the most affectionate or playful parents. They do not like to roll
around and get dirty with their children, nor do they enjoy loud
situations, and these types of things send a Snake parent running for their
inevitable private space within the house.

Year of the Horse
Horse parents are well known for their ability to do several things at the
same time. They can carry on a conversation on the phone, watch T.V., fold
the laundry and watch the kids, all at once. These abilities certainly come
in handy when raising a child. Horse parents work very hard to make sure
their children are intellectually and creatively stimulated and to make
sure they depend only on themselves when problem solving or figuring
something out.
Horse parents feel strongly that their children should be as independent as
possible and should be taught basic principles that will enable them to
depend more on themselves than on anyone else. If Horse parents are not
careful, this style of childrearing may cause them to appear cool,
unsentimental parents concerned more with helping themselves than with
helping their children.

Year of the Goat
Goat parents are natural caregivers. They automatically turn on their
parental instincts and take on parental responsibilities. They are family
people who often have large families, and they lavish love and affection on
their children. They expect their children to be polite and respectful to
themselves and others. Goats generally have long-lasting, healthy
relationships with their own parents.
They often settle down close to where they grew up or close to their own
parents so their children can be close to their grandparents. Goats often
move elderly family members into their own homes to take care of them
during their declining years. They encourage their children to establish
and maintain close relationships with family and take great pains to stress
the importance of this for the future of the family.

Year of the Monkey
Monkey parents can be more like big brothers and sisters than actual
parents. They retain their childlike qualities into their adulthood and
therefore find it easier to relate to their children than other people
might. Monkey parents don’t experience the "generation gap" to the same
extent that other families might experience it, partly because they
remember what it was like to be a child.
However, becoming a parent can cramp a Monkey’s style. They are not ones to
stay inside helping with their children's homework on a Friday night. They
would prefer to be out and about, and sometimes take their children with
them if it’s appropriate. Monkey parents must find a way to reconcile their
family with their social life.

Year of the Rooster
Rooster parents are quite protective of their children, always nurturing
them and caring for them. Sometimes they can be a bit overprotective in
trying to keep them safe. They are known to be very strict with their
children, demanding respect not only for others, but their own environments
and surroundings as well.
Rooster parents will absolutely not tolerate bad manners and are very
concerned with how they appear to their children, as well as what their
children say about them to others when they're not around. Parental
reputation is important to Roosters, as they would hate to be thought
wanting at what they consider a very important task in life. It may be
better for the Rooster parent to not worry so much, and to lighten up a
little once in a while.

Year of the Dog
Dog parents are always very good at putting their family first, above all
else. They are wonderfully supportive parents who take great pride in the
happiness and well being of their children. They are selfless parents,
content to wear the same old clothes so their children may have stylish new
clothes for the new school year. Dog parents make for very stoic role
models for their children and keep close bonds with their offspring well
after they’ve grown up. They are experts at playing the "guilt game" on
their grown children, and can usually manipulate them to serve their own
ends. Dogs were made for having children and raising a family. They are
the best parents in the entire Chinese zodiac!

Year of the Pig
Pig people make for supremely devoted mothers and fathers. They are
affectionate, loving, supportive and caring parents. Pig parents are
definitely homebodies, preferring to stay at home with their families than
to go out on the town. The Pig parent's priority is their children, and
they are incredibly protective and watchful of their kids, well into adult
life.
Pig parents do not tolerate any sort of threat or attack against their
homes and families, and will not hesitate to take drastic action against
any such perceived action on the part of their enemies. They must be
careful, however, not to go overboard with such protective instincts, or
many bad things could be the result, not the least of which might be a
stay in jail!
Parents · Western Horoscope

Aries
Aries parents are kind and generous to their children, but not always
sympathetic or understanding. While they are proud of their children, they
are apt to be somewhat unconventional and advanced in their method of
rearing them. They may urge their children to use their own judgment a
great deal more than is permitted to most children. The chances are that
the children will develop considerable initiative at an early age, and
certainly this will encourage the development.
On the whole Aries parents are fairly efficient and a good example of
independence and courage to their growing child. Filled with independence,
Aries parents are likely to want to instill this quality in their own
children. As a result their children always feel a bit pressured. Aries
parents are very ambitious as far as their children are concerned.

Taurus
Taurus parents are some of the best in the entire Western zodiac. They have
endless patience and a natural love for children and home life. Taurus
parents have a protective streak in them, and while they are seldom
brilliant and intellectual people themselves, their kindness of heart and
common sense, as well as strong intuition, go a long way towards giving a
child the kind of guidance that is required. The Taurus parent wants their
child to appreciate its home and the family as the focal point within it.
This can make it hard when the time comes to cut the apron strings. Taurus
parents often take the time to have lots of children and develop an
intricate and permanent extended family structure to avoid being alone in
their declining years.

Gemini
Gemini people do not make ideal parents. They are far too intellectual and
absorbed by the demands of their mind to provide the emotional support that
children require. These people have a youthful outlook themselves and fresh
and lively point of view, and this may help them to be somewhat connected
to their offspring.
Gemini parents are not patient enough with their children and are lacking
in warmth and affection. They are too intellectual for their children and
often expect their children to think like adults, and when this doesn't
happen, they can get unreasonably angry. Gemini parents appreciate alert
and lively children. They thoroughly enjoy being like brothers or sisters
to their own children.

Cancer
Cancer parents are exacting, fussy and critical in bringing up their
children. They supervise their children so closely that they often get
nervous and very self-conscious. However, they give plenty of love to the
children in the process. The Cancer parent will want perfection in their
child, and for their children to live out their own failed dreams.
The basic traits of a Cancer parent are those of stifling, almost spoiling
parenthood. Cancer parents are sympathetic, eager to please and, most of
all, far too easygoing with their children. They need their children as
much as their children need them, and once the kids are grown they may well
adopt another child, because their need to be needed is strong and will
find expression come what may.

Leo
Leo parents are proud of their offspring and will want the best things in
the world for them. Children are an essential part of life to the Leo
parent, and they see their children as extensions of who they are. If their
child makes mistakes, their pride can be hurt. The Leo parent is generous
and loves their children to the extent of pampering them sometimes.
However, they can be quite strict when it is required for the well being of
the child. It is not easy for children with Leo parents to obtain and
sustain their own identity, a factor that may have contributed do the
disruption of the nuclear family pattern in recent years as more and more
children leave home rather than remain subject to heavy parental control
past a certain age.

Virgo
Virgo people make for excellent parents, as they are meticulous and highly
conscious of the needs of their children. However, their one serious fault
is that they tend to become over-vigilant at times, and their careful
supervision tends to devolve into constant nagging over time if not
monitored.
The Virgo parent can give their child personal space only after they are
totally convinced that the child has become capable of looking after
itself. Virgo parents will remain concerned about their children's well
being long after they have all grown up and gone their separate ways. Virgo
parents thrive on cleanliness, and will make their children aware of dirt
from an early age, often toilet training them ahead of schedule.

Libra
Libra parents pay attention to all their children equally. They take pains
to prepare themselves by study for the task of raising children ahead of
time. Libra mothers in particular are the sort who will go to concerts in
order to expose their unborn child to a bit of culture. All children born
to Libra parents will have their chance to explore the arts, whether indeed
they want it or not.
Libra parents have an instinctive understanding of their children and are
quite sensitive to their children’s needs. They are friendly and honest
with their children, and thus are able to gain and maintain their
children's complete trust. They are capable of planning and executing an
intelligent program of development for their children that is neither
tyrannical nor too indulgent.

Scorpio
Scorpio parents are very careful and doting with regard to their children.
They are jealously possessive of their children, and rarely appreciate fond
grandparents or other relatives expressing opinions about the upbringing
and welfare of their children. Some of the Scorpio parent's qualities are
highly unsuitable for the raising of children, as they can be impatient,
ambitious, tyrannical and severe.
Their devotion to their children is boundless, but their parental behavior
is often lacking in common sense and self-control. They are often overly
harsh, and their methods of discipline are often far too severe. Despite
the fact that the Scorpio parent is very intuitive and knowledgeable, they
often cannot discipline themselves sufficiently to be a good role model for
their children.

Sagittarius
Sagittarius parents rarely get bent out of shape over the small details of
raising a family. They take to parenthood with both a sense of emotional
pride and an inner resolution to fulfill their responsibilities. They are
friendly with their children and are never too restrictive. They are very
open and honest with their children and easily win their necessary
confidence.
They simultaneously are able to both treat them as equals and look after
all of their needs. The Sagittarius parent is not sufficiently detailed in
the supervision of their children, and they often appear to be
disinterested. They often remain too occupied with the world to look after
or take keen interest in the activities of their children, although they
can appear to be doting parents at all times.

Capricorn
Capricorn parents are often very strict disciplinarians who have a definite
idea from the start of what they want their child's future to look like.
The children of a Capricorn are always encouraged to better themselves, and
their formal education begins very early on in their lives. The harder the
child works, the more the parents like him; but it can be hard for a child
who is not suited to the pressures of personal ambition.
The Capricorn parent is a perfectionist as far as a child’s improvement is
concerned. They judge their children by adult standards and are often too
harsh if the kids fail to achieve instant success in their activities.
Capricorns care little for personal pleasure or relaxation and they will
frown upon such tendencies in their own children. This can put a definite
damper on family life.

Aquarius
Aquarius parents want their children to be both independent thinkers and
obedient to their wishes. As a result, there can be a lot of mixed signals
being given in this family. Some children may be born independent by
nature, others need much more guidance, and the trouble is that Aquarian
parents are not much good at recognizing these differences in their
children.
The result is that they muddle along in a constant state of surprise at the
problems their children create, and they are not adept at helping them find
solutions. But what they lose in well-timed guidance they make up for in
providing companionship to their children. This can continue to a point
long after the child has reached adulthood, and it is then that such
devotion may be appreciated the most.

Pisces
Pisces parents can come to be too dependent on their children, even in the
process of loving them to distraction. They love family consultations and
try to involve even their youngest children in discussions about family
affairs. The Pisces parent can achieve wonders with their kids, and when
called upon in an emergency they will always be there. They thrive on
memories complete with baby photos and memorabilia.
They are always concerned with the spiritual welfare of their child as much
as they are concerned with giving material aid. They enjoy companionship
with their children and supervise them in just the right way. They are
neither too indulgent nor too rigid. They are seldom aware of their
children’s shortcomings, however, as they can be too involved in their own
pursuits to find fault with their family.
